Ironically, this intense emphasis on confidentiality in psychotherapy, which is at least partially intended to synthesize a haven away from the toxicity of the cultural atmosphere of shaming judgmentalness, simultaneously and unwittingly colludes with the presumption of shameful truths that have potentially ruinous impacts by vigorously supporting the notion that maintaining utter secrecy is an urgent priority. Similar, then, is the mixed message of Alcoholics Anonymous and its offshoots, which is designed as a haven of non-judgmentalness, receiving the stories and confessions of its addicted members with unconditional acceptance, but then includes its inadvertently collusive accommodation to the wider consciousness Culture of Shamefear by “protecting” its members from shame by legislating that such unconditional acceptance cannot include the full (last name) identity of the one being received.
